Sailing Away from Pirates

From Yachtpals, a short piece about how the piracy situation is forcing cruisers and racers to re-think their plans.

Here's what should be happening (thanks to the guys at EagleSpeak)....

Kannad Marine Launches Personal AIS-Based EPIRB

From the GCaptain blog - an interesting piece of kit that hopefully will be making its way onto the US market soon. Panbo has also done a review.

Self Analysis by Chirontraining

Here's a great piece, summing up a few thoughts I have nicely:
Self Analysis
A quote - 'So what are the stupid life choices? Almost all social violence happens in four kinds of places:...'

Just started (on another long flight) a book by Mark Hatmaker - No Second Chance. He also stresses awareness and attitude as keys in avoiding the use of violence in your defense. I will review it later (probably next month).

Until then, train hard and train smart.

The Survival Laboratory

Don Rearic has a long history of posting great articles on the net, here's a link (and an excerpt below) from The Survival Blog

Versatile Tools for Survival
You can spread peanut butter with it. You can slice the sandwich in half with it on the diagonal when you are done...with it. You can open a box with it. You can cut the tape when you are sealing up a box...with it.

We are being dumbed down. We are being turned into a more primitive people because of childish fear and hateful bigotry and stupidity.

The Knife.

And they have some great links along the right hand side. I feel honored to be in the company of these people, many I consider mentors.

Speaking of knives, here's one that looks interesting (a late Christmas present?)...

March Update

Just posting a personal training update.

Finishing my 7th cycle of TacFit Commando. I feel it fits in great with my fitness and gung fu goals, and my family time goals.

In between the 'Tabata protocols' sections, instead of just jogging in place to keep moving, I add in a variation of the '5 Elbow Shields' - for each side. Keeps a martial feel to the workouts.

Piracy news

Although I try to not to dwell on the Somalia piracy issues, as they have (in the past) tended to target commercial vessels, here is another attack on a civilian vessel that was foiled.

Yacht crew rescued from pirate attack by private security firm
- from the good folks at gCaptain.

This blog tends to support the cruising and recreational boating community, and we like to focus on what you the boater can do to protect you and the family. For those so inclined, here's a link to a small device that could help you in a close-quarters type event - Comtech stinger.

Piracy update

Sad news again, another yacht taken.

Yachters: Piracy Risks & Responsibilities

I worked with Millenium Group at the Miami Boat Show, we did a seminar on security awareness, and had a few attendees. We need to get the word out that this is not the same environment it was. People worldwide are getting a bit more hungry, desperate.

Piracy strikes close - from Tim Forderer - a recap of the Quest.

Awareness is the key in many of the events that happen to us. There are plenty of resources to adequately plan your trips. Email me at yachtsecurity@privacyharbor.com if you need more information.
